The hospital has played a pivotal role in pushing U.S. pediatric cancer survival rates from 20 to 80 percent overall, and is the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children. It is also a leader in the research and treatment of blood disorders and infectious diseases in children. St. Jude was founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, who believed that no child should die in the dawn of life. Headquartered in Birmingham, AL, the rapidly expanding Southern Living brand is part of Time Inc., one of the largest content companies in the world and the largest publisher in the United States. She pairs unexpected fabrics and trims on window treatments, pillows and upholstery with surprising uses of color on cabinetry, walls and ceilings. “Our refined farmhouse draws from Tennessee’s rich architectural legacy to look like it has always been there,” said Lindsay Bierman, Editor-in-Chief of Southern Living. I just bought this at TJ Maxx a few weeks ago and love it. Jaime Dudney, Barbara Mandrell’s daughter, was introduced from the speaker podium during the talks and I noted that she and I had on the same dress! I couldn’t let the opportunity go by without speaking to her and making light of the fact that we were dressed alike.
Southern Living Idea House, Nashville TN: Porches
Castle Homes earned the coveted 2012 Southern Living Custom Builder of the Year for their exceptional home building. Founded in 1992, Castle Homes is a top Nashville-based design-build company producing impeccable homes with a guaranteed price – unique to the Middle Tennessee building industry. This Southern Living Idea House is more of a complex than a single home – it’s a farmhouse that connects to several small guest houses, or “bunkies,” by covered porches for easy access in all weather conditions.
Every year, Southern Living selects a project team to develop one “Idea House” that inspires consumers to experiment in their homes and gardens. We put together an all-star team to design the ultimate Nashville house. Mimicking an old farmhouse, the main house revolves around one large living room flanked by a hardworking kitchen on one end that boasts a laundry room with enviable laundry room shelving. The exterior boasts a wraparound front porch with extra-deep porch swings and completely a separate rear-dining porch that is connected to the living room and dining room. Outside the main house, Historical Concepts designed several guest houses and bunkies each with their own kitchenette and porch so that company could have their own privacy.
The Back Porch
Each year Southern Living builds one spectacular Idea House in the nation which showcases the best and latest in building, design and gardening. This exciting project returned to the Nashville area after over a decade to the beautiful Fontanel property, former home of country music legend Barbara Mandrell’s family. Designer Phoebe Howard, Southern Living columnist, divided the large areas into individual vignettes including one of our favorite, the hanging porch swing with Sunbrella pillows. For more than 30 years, Historical Concepts has designed residences in classical and Southern vernacular styles, marrying elements of traditional design with floor plans and details that reflect today’s pattern of living. Inspired by architectural precedent and the characteristics of the setting, these houses pay homage to and perpetuate the South’s deep sense of place and are timeless in style and enduring in value.

This ideahouse was built on the property of Fontanel, which is Barbara Mandrell’s old mansion, which we also toured. In the meantime, stay tuned to The Decorologist – I’ve got lots more to share about the design trends and paint colors I spotted at the Southern Living Idea House at Fontanel. Later in the week, I’ll share Phoebe Howard’s insight into her beautiful designs for this space. It was such a pleasure to get to meet her in person and to receive a signed copy of her book, The Joy of Decorating.

Bathing the kitchen in color creates a cozy, friendly feel. "The one thing I had to have was white knobs," says Phoebe. Cable railings wrap the porches off of every room to allow for clear lines of vision to the stunning gardens below. Windows with 4 over 4 divided lights are often seen on historic farmhouses, so the team carried them throughout each structure for a consistent look. Backside of the Ideahouse looking in from the courtyard.

Background against a pretty green hill, you can see the expanse of the courtyard. On the edge of the property, two miniature versions of the main house—known affectionately as “bunkies”—serve as a visual gateway into the compound. Fresh cut flowers and pretty accessories lend a feminine feel to this bunkie. The casual dining space is surrounded by windows on three sides.
I was honored to be invited to a preview showing last week with a selected group of successful bloggers from the area. Brittney adores the hat-lady print, though she's not fond of its colors. "Even things you don't love can work in the right space," she says. She painted the walls in Farrow & Ball's Calamine (No. 230).

Also, several other bloggers covered the house and it was so good to see them all, including Dana Tucker, Blonde Mom Blog, The Decorologist, and LLH Designs. Met up with the Ballard Designs gang and it’s always fun to hang out with them too. They are one of our big sponsors at Haven this year and we can’t wait for that either. The big wrap around porch came in handy, with many spilling into the courtyard.
This is another guesthouse suite that connects with the porch. Our 2013 Idea House is now the Inn at Fontanel, a six-room boutique hotel outside Nashville. With six employees and someone to care for guests around the clock, the attention here is as personal as it gets.

For over two decades Nancy McNulty's public relations efforts have built and launched an interesting spectrum of projects from premier home tours and new businesses to product lines and signature events. She handled the PR for the Middle TN Home Builder's Parade of Homes for over 10 years, served on the PR team for the Southern Living Idea House and the HGTV Smart Home 2014. She delivers engaging campaigns based on strong content creation that helps to successfully build, brand and grow businesses into industry leaders. The subtle color palette of the porch furniture blends with the rustic views surrouding the house. Again, because Southern Living will be covering the house in the August issue this year, we couldn’t take pics of all rooms, but did get to do a preview of the dining room and guesthouse. This is the well-lit dining room, simple and spacious.
